Look who I found at the gate.
It was totally unplanned but at the Gate on GMR I met up with Mel, Aaron, Kevin, Derel and Loren. They were getting ready to make their way up to the shack and beyond on this fine July 3rd. I was in luck because I didn't want to ride alone yet made no attempt to ask anyone to ride with me. I left the house solo today hoping I'd find some biycle friends to ride with to Mt. Baldy.
Loren kept an honest pace up GMR. For the first half he held my wheel, then after the first saddle, he took over and dragged me up to the shack. Loren made me work on that second half, and when we got to the end, I told him that he wore me out. He said, "really, it wasn't that bad." Not bad eh? Well it was a good hustle for me. At the top of Monroe I decided to head back down GMR to meet up with Derel, Mel, Aaron and Kevin. Derel wasn't too far behind. Loren and Derel continued onto Mt. Baldy while the rest of us took a break at Monroe.
Aaron, Mel, Kevin and I rode together for the rest of the journey to Mt. Baldy. We kept a more manageble pace. At the Mt. Baldy Lodge the owners put out a cooler filled with ice. Cold ice on a hot day is AWESOME! If you have a chance to make it to the Baldy Lodge try their cinnamon rolls. They are great.
After filling up our water bottles with ice water we headed down Mt. Baldy Rd. On the way down some guy on a tri-bike had a rear blowout. He handled it well but it was loud. His tire was destroyed. Unfortunately the tire somehow seized his rear wheel and he had to walk the rest of the way until he was able to get a phone signal. I've been there before. Aaron, Mel and Kevin were waiting for me at Shinn, then we continued down Mountain Ave before parting ways. It was a great ride. This was the first time riding with Mel and Aaron.
