"Every morning Canadian neuroscientist Brian Christie, PhD, gives his brain an extra boost. We're not talking about tossing back multiple strong shots of espresso or playing one of those mind-training games advertised all over Facebook.
"I hop on my bike, go to the gym for 45 minutes, then ride the rest of the way to work," says Christie. "When I get to my desk, my brain is at peak activity for a few hours." After his mental focus sputters to a halt later in the day, he jump-starts it with another short spin to run errands.
Ride, work, ride, repeat. It's a scientifically proven system. In a recent study in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, scientists found that people scored higher on tests of memory, reasoning, and planning after 30 minutes of spinning on a stationary bike than they did before they rode. They also completed the tests faster after pedaling."

Protected Intersections For Bicyclists
Protected Intersections For Bicyclists from Nick Falbo on Vimeo.
Protected bike lanes are the latest approach US cities are taking to help their residents get around by bike. But these protected lanes lose their buffer separation at intersections, reducing the comfort and safety for people riding.
What the protected bike lane needs is the protected intersection.
This proposal for the George Mason University 2014 Cameron Rian Hays Outside the Box Competition presents a vision for a safe, clear intersection design that improves conditions for all users. Proper design of refuge islands, crossing position and signal timing can create a safe intersection that people of all ages and abilities would feel safe in.

"As acceptance of the bicycle lifestyle gains traction throughout North America, business owners and entrepreneurs of all stripes are hard at work entrenching bike-friendliness into their business models. Why? Quite simply, it’s a smart business move. In addition to reducing the need to invest in costly car parking facilities, recent studies have demonstrated that bicycle commuters take fewer sick days, are happier, and are less stressed. These riders often arrive to work faster and with fewer delays than drivers or transit riders.
How do employees benefit from a bike-friendly business? How do customers? What steps can business owner make to be more bike-friendly? For the uninitiated, here are a few basics:"

"When Australia’s Tiffany Cromwell won the 2013 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad classic she had every right to be delighted – and one reason not to be. She’d just cemented her name on the European scene with what was arguably the biggest win to date in her career, trouncing Megan Gruanier of Rabobank in the sprint to seal a brilliant victory.
The win brought her the spotlight her talent deserved and gained her a reputation for being a no nonsense rider who could mix it with the best in the sport. Surely, a win like that will have brought in a nice little pot in prize money? Well, not quite.
For her suffering on that cold morning at the tail end of February last year, Cromwell picked up an altogether underwhelming 270 euro. After splitting that amongst her teammates she might just have had enough for a glass of vino and a plate of pasta down her local trattoria.
Compare that to the 65,135 euro prize money taken home by Luca Paolini of Katusha, the winner of the men’s edition, and you can see that there is something of a disparity between the money on offer between the men and the women in professional cycling."

Coffee Klatch - Ethiopian Kochere Grade 1, Washed
Updated 2014-06-29: I just finished the package and yes, this is a much more floral coffee. There is a subtle sweetness that I found distracting at first. It reminded me of a strong tea and the Ethiopian Kochere should be enjoyed black, no cream, no sugar, to fully appreciate it. However, after approximately cup 5 I got used to the flavor. And especially after a cup of crappy Maxwell House, I can't wait to go back to Coffee Klatch and get me some real coffee. Overall the Ethiopian Kochere isn't my favorite, I think I prefer more medium/dark roast coffees. I'd give this one a 8 out of 10.

"When his son turned 2, South Dakota dad Ryan McFarland bought him a tricycle and a bike with training wheels — each done up in racing stripes.
"My enthusiasm quickly turned to frustration as I watched my eager son of just 20 pounds struggle with the weight and complexity of these so-called 'children's bikes,'" McFarland says.
So McFarland, a dirt bike racer himself, started to rethink the traditional bicycle, looking for ways to turn it into a ride more suitable to his son. He thought about drilling holes or cutting away parts, but then he had an aha moment: He could get rid of the pedal system altogether.
What would provide propulsion instead? Feet."

Pomona - Chantry Flats - Rose Bowl and Back
69.1 miles and all I got as a memento was epic bird shit on my shoulder and knee.
Yeah it was gross. I thought a tree nut or something hit me from above. Then I looked at my leg and saw the splatter damage on the knee. It was gross. Then I felt the warm, wet nastiness on the left shoulder. It was gross.
Mike and Gary were laughing, and kept saying, "AWESOME!" It wasn't awesome, it wasn't funny. I squirted off my knee and took off my jersey to clean it. If was ALL gross.
