The Speed Factor
This chart shows how many calories a 150-pound rider would expend every hour for various kinds of riding, according to the Compendium of Physical Activities Tracking Guide, a standardized set of calorie-burn measurements. To figure out how many calories you'll use, first take your weight and divide it by 2.2 to express it in kilograms. Then multiply that number by the METS (or metabolic equivalents, a unit of the energy cost of an activity) number in parentheses.

1 HOUR RIDING AT                     BURNS
Less than 10 mph, very leisurely        272 calories (4 METS )
10-12 mph, easy                              408 calories (6 METS )
12-14 mph, moderate                      544 calories (8 METS )
14-16 mph, vigorous                       680 calories (10 METS )
16-19 mph, very fast                       816 calories (12 METS )
More than 20 mph, racing (no drafting)     1,088 calories (16 METS )

Racing Sucks!

LA Historical Park, DNF.  I flatted in about two minutes of racing.

Velocity Cross, 50th out of 60 racers.  It was a bad day for me.  Bonked.

Spooky Cross, crashed on the second lap.  Bent both shifters but managed to get left shifter back in order.  Right shifter bent inward but still functional so I decided to finish the race.  Shoot, I paid for it, might as well get my monies worth.  Oh and by the last lap, my front tire was F L A T ! ! !

So its 11:34 pm, I have a bruised knee from my crash earlier today and three bad races this CX season thus far.

Ugh!

Chemistry Comedy

A photon checks into a hotel and is asked if he needs any help with his luggage.
"No thanks, I'm traveling light."

A helium molecule walks in afterwards. The bellhop asks if he needs any help.
Helium doesn't react.

A neutron walks into the hotel bar and asks "how much for a beer?" The bartender says, "for you? no charge."

Two protons walk into the bar and run into each other. One of them falls down. "You OK?" asks the other. "I think so," says the proton. "You sure?" the other asks. "Yeah," says the proton...
"I'm positive."

"Heard any good sodium jokes lately?" "Na..."

Hey man you got any Sodium Hypobromite?
...NaBrO

Wanna hear a joke about nitric oxide?
NO.

(You guys better slow down. It won't be long until all the good jokes argon.)

A Higgs Boson walks into a catholic church. The priest tells him to leave. The boson replies "Well, you can't have mass without me!"

I lost a proton the other day. I need to start keeping an Ion them

Electron walks into a bar, goes “Pint of your horrible beer mate.” Barman goes “No need to be so negative.”

When I heard oxygen eloped with magnesium I was all like OMg.

Baldy Ride with Mark from Covina

I set out this Saturday morning riding solo.  I decided on Glendora Mountain Road to Mt Baldy, and it was going to be a "chill" ride. Neither a hammerfest nor a race against the clock, just slow and stead.

I set out at 6:30 am, it was dark, and I didn't see any other riders until the top of Monroe.  As I turned the bend at the maintenance shed, I spotted another rider at the top of Monroe.  I picked up my pace and caught up with the rider at about fork plus 2.

It was Mark from Covina.  I have seen him before on the mountain and on Annette's site, GlendoraMTNRoad.com. I matched his pace and from fork plus 2, we basically rode together before parting ways at Mt Baldy Village.

This was the first time actually talking with Mark.  We talked work, family and cars.  It turns out he too had a Chevy Nova as a first car.  Mine was a 1972, his was a 1974.

Mark, if you happen upon my site, send me an email and we have to connect again for another ride.  Maybe to the ski lifts.

CX @ Prado Regional

This time around I entered Adam in the Youth 6 to 9 category.  He did really well and scored a 4th place finish.  He was extremely proud of his medal and root beer prize.

I raced Mens C and actually completed the race.  No flats, but the heat and grass got to me.  Racing on grass stinks.  It is bumpy, and the friction really makes it hard.  Underneath the grass were gopher holes, ruts, mud.  There was no coasting to "recover" while on the grass.  You had to pedal through it all.

CX @ LA Historical Park

A couple weekends ago I entered Adam and Natalie in a CX Kiddie Race. Both of them really enjoyed it. I raced the Mens C for about 2 minutes.  I flatted very early on which ended my race all to soon.
