Boston’s streets aren’t wide enough for bikes and cars. It’s as simple as that.

To me, it’s not a debate about reckless drivers or reckless bicyclists. It’s about inches. Inches is how close my ’07 Toyota — 21⁄2 tons of steel and iron and chrome — comes to the unprotected bicyclists I pass every day.


I’ve been driving forever. Bicyclists still make me nervous. My nightmare: that I may not swerve fast enough to avoid a bicyclist who comes into my lane. Or worse: It’s nighttime or it’s raining and I don’t see them at all. And I hit them.
