Family Life - Adam Starts Soccer
Adam's been asking and begging to play soccer. While I'd rather he start racing BMX, he insisted on playing soccer. So we signed him up for the Spring season and today was his first game. Adam was so excited to play and, the day before, all he could talk about was soccer this and soccer that.
Today, his first game finally arrived, and the whole family was out to cheer him on. Grandmas and Grandpas, cousins, aunts, sisters and of course Jamie and I lined the field, shouting words of encouragement and sideline coaching whenever Adam got the ball.
Adam did great and his excitement was visible in his clenched up fists, straighten back, outstretched neck and gigantic smile. Just watching Adam play you could almost feel his pure excitement.
And so starts another chapter in the Castillo's lives. Soccer Mom/Dad and loading up the kids for ballet, piano and now soccer games. Funny how time flies by us, it seems like just yesterday Adam came into this world. Now he's running up and down the soccer field while mom, dad and sisters cheer him on!

Ghost Bike Documentary Trailer
Ghost Bike Documentary Trailer from Danny and Kat ZKO on Vimeo.
Ghost Bike is a 60-minute documentary motion picture about the creation of ‘Ghost Bikes’ as roadside memorials for cyclists killed by motor vehicles. The film also serves as a testimony to the lives that are affected by the conflict between motorist and cyclists to safely share the road. We are documenting members of the cycling community who volunteer to install ghost bikes anonymously at sites where cyclists were killed.

Fargo Street Annual Hill Climb Challenge
This was my third year doing the Fargo Street Hill Climb Challenge and I managed to get up the hill 37 times. 37 times was difficult but I think I had enough in me to do at least 40.
The official start time is 9 am and it goes to noon. If racers, hit 50 by noon, then the promoters will stick around and stay as long as the leader keeps going. The all time record is 101 times up Fargo Street in nine hours.
Kevin and I have a tradition of eating at Nick's Place in LA. Nick's Place is a little diner across from LA's Historical Park in DT.
Kevin wasn't able to make it up the street this time. It's one steep hill and pictures don't do it any justice.
Unigeezer was out today. This time he made it up three times. Not to shabby.
Elliptigo guy was there too. While most zig zag up Fargo Street, Ellipigo guy goes straight up.

Marathon Crash Race 2013
I've been waiting for this ride since last year's Marathon Crash Race. The early hours before the start of the LA Marathon, thousands of riders gathered at Tangs Donuts and at about 4:30 am the Crash Race begun.
The day before, racers lined up in downtown LA to pick up bib numbers. I was one of them. The line was epic. I stood in this line for three hours. Next year, I think I will just "Crash" the Marathon Crash Race.
At the registration there were 100s or 1000s of people. The line moved at a snails pace.
My first spoke card? The promoters were handing these spoke cards out with information on what to do if you crash or are injured during the race. At the race, I saw a lot of people go down. Hauling ass fixie style, large crowds, dark streets and sharp turns don't mix well.
The registration lines were epic. I only registered because racers would start ahead of the general public. Well that was all thrown out the door on race day. There was so many cyclists and we all lined up with no separation between racers and enthusiast.
Pic Above - People in front of me.
Pic Below - People behind me.
Yeah, that's a lot of people.
Well, I managed to make it to Santa Monica and then back to Tangs safely. It was a great ride/race. I can't wait for next year's race!

You Spin Me Round from The Department of Style on Vimeo.
Find us at www.thedepartmentofstyle.com
There is an incredible purity to track cycling. It's not unlike great design. When you pare everything down, forget the bells, whistles, frills and anything that isn't absolutely necessary, you are left with a track bike and a perfectly smooth, unobstructed course on which to ride it.
This is what a velodrome represents. Cycing, stripped down to the bare essentials. And it is beautiful. The bikes are works of art, fit to be stared at for lengthy periods, even while at rest.
The Forest City Velodrome (www.forestcityvelodrome.ca) in London, Canada, is a rare beast. There aren't many indoor velodromes in the world, and this is one of the more unusual of them all. In 2005, a few track cycling enthusiasts found an old unused hockey arena that had been set for demolition, and figured it was just barely big enough to cram a velodrome into.
**********
The Department of Style is a field guide to the timeless, the adventurous, and the enthusiastic. We celebrate craft. We explore tradition. We find the creative imaginations that take classic forms and make them their own.
It is about understanding that in life, doing something right takes time, and skill, and effort. But therein lies the joy. Finding people who still do those things that way and telling their stories is the original Departmental mandate.

Spinning Southward Profiles - El Salvador de los Perros from melloajello on Vimeo.
This is a short video about Mike Logsdon, the younger of the two brothers who founded Spinning Southward.
He cared a great deal about the downtrodden street dogs of Mexico, so much so that he was willing to go against his better judgement, pick up an abandoned puppy on the side of the road, put it in his backpack, and take it with us for who knows how long...
This compassion is one of the traits that made Mike an inspiring guy to share the 16,000 mile journey with.

GMR to Mt Baldy - FIXED
Second fixed gear Baldy ride of the year. It hurt and I wanted to coast. I met up with John from Glendora and we rode together until about Fork plus 7 miles before I dropped off the pace. That last section hurt.
John, send me your email. I might be interested in your ACH ride (Not in the fixed gear though).
