Kevin sent me these photos today. He's making his way to Mt. Baldy! Fork plus 4 is just 'before what I call the point of no return. Kevin made it just past, a testing of his will and the concrete "waters". It was hot but he made it out and back.
Keep going, Kevin.

Our "My NYC Biking Story" series is back in action this week with a profile of Kevin Bolger, a.k.a. Squid. For 20 years Squid has worked as a commercial cyclist. He has done cargo delivery and food delivery, and at one point he co-owned a messenger company. From his position as a fixture of the NYC messenger community, he has also helped evolve New York's bike messenger culture.
Squid was a pioneering organizer of alley cat races and track bike competitions to bring messengers together. Recently, he has devoted himself to mainstreaming cycling as a mode of transportation in NYC, serving as a Bicycle Ambassador for Transportation Alternatives and educating working cyclists on bike safety. In our profile, he discusses how city streets have become more bike-friendly and how he has changed his own riding habits to be a role model for young cyclists.
Many thanks to attorney Adam White for sponsoring this Streetfilm. In this short clip, Adam explains why he wanted to sponsor this video and why it is important to support Streetfilms.

Glendora Mountain Road to Mt Baldy a la FIXED GEAR
So I did it, I finally made it to Mt Baldy by way of Glendora Mountain Road via my fixed gear bike. Yep, I rode every inch of the way.
Saturday, I left the house with the idea I would get to at least Fork Plus 4. Fork plus 4 is a great goal to have and I have done it once before via fixed gear. At about Fork plus 4, GRR starts heading down before the long climb that continues until mile marker 8 (8.29 to be exact).
Mile Marker 4 also represents a sort of mental road block. Anything past and you have entered an increasing point of no return. As you eat up miles, there comes a point where you might as well ride to Mt. Baldy. The trick for me was, do I attempt riding to Mt. Baldy and either A. Ride back the way I came, or B. Bomb down Mt. Baldy Road fixie style.
If I ride back the way I came, where do I decide to turn around. Will I have enough left in the tank to even make it home. Then there is option B. riding home via Mt. Baldy. You can easily reach 40 to 50 mph down Mt. Baldy. At 46 x 15 there is no way my legs can spin to reach these speeds and coasting is not happening on the fixie. Bombing down Mt. Baldy on my fixed gear scares the snot out of me.
So lets back up in my story. So I get to GMR and Sierra Madre. I head up and just past Boulder Springs Drive, it starts getting steep and I think to myself, "Wow, I am tired." I start second guessing my goal of Fork plus 4. I tell myself just keep going, its a chill ride. I continue eating up miles and I see a rider about 100 feet ahead of me just past Marilyn Monroe (MM 10.49). I stop, take of picture of Marilyn and think to myself, "How fun a rabbit!" I get back on my bike, pick up the pace and start reeling him in. I catch him at Newmans.
After Newmans I realize, I actually feel really good and have made great time. By East Fork I had already beaten my best time (On Fixed Gear) by three minutes. The rabbit catches up to me on the rollers between Fork Plus 1 and 2 and we ride together thru MM 4. On the descent past MM 4 he passes me and I tell myself I will hang with him until I get dropped. Between MM 4 and Mt Baldy the rabbit kept a decent distance that gradually increased as we made it to MM 8.29. After MM 8.29, he was gone, but I was essentially past the point of no return. So, what the hell, I rode into Mt. Baldy.
I made it to Baldy and now I had to decide on either getting back the way I came or bombing down Mt. Baldy. The former seemed so LONG and boring, so I decided to take my chances and ride down Mt. Baldy. Yeah, it was crazy and scary and borderline insane but I managed, with the frequent use of my front brake, to get down in one piece. I essentially had to pump my front brake every few seconds to maintain control. Would I ever try it brake-less, NO WAY!
Well, I made it to Mt; Baldy fixed. Another goal achieved.

Damn Thieves
I was walking the kids to our local 7 Eleven for Slurpees when I came upon this cut bicycle lock. So sad, and I was actually bugged by this. A stolen bicycle. I imagined the anger and sadness the owner must have felt when he/she came back to retrieve their bike.
I guess no bike is safe from eager thieves. So sad ...

When it comes time to review something like this year's parcours for Paris-Roubaix, the first place to look is last year's course. We've clicked a lot of keys in the service of describing course changes this year, and we aren't done. But the Queen of the Classics isn't your average parcours subject, for two reasons: the course is the star of the show, and it doesn't change much. Apart from some hollow threats about too much moss on the Forest of Arenberg secteur, no big changes were planned this year. The cobbles secteurs appear to be identical to 2011, the distance is either the same or a few hundred meters longer, depending on whether people are rounding out numbers. There isn't much to say beyond last year...

Riding up GMR with Bicycle Friends
Today I rode up GMR to Mt Baldy with Michael and Randy. This was my first time riding with Randy, a neighbor's family friend. Randy and Michael met at my house early, like 5:30 am early, to get a jump on the day and possibly sneak in some extra miles.
We officially left the house a little later than 5:30 am, but it was all good and it didn't take long to get to Baldy. Once at Baldy, Michael and I decided to ride back the way we came. Randy decided to drop down Mt Baldy Road to head home.
Riding back down GMR I was amazed at the number of riders out today. Scores, packs, groups, whatever you call them, of cyclist were out and conquering the mountain. Just past the maintenance shed we saw Annette, Bill and Matt heading up. We stopped and talked a bit. Its been ages since I rode with Annette, and we missed our anniversary. Bill was out too. Last week he achieved his goal to ride to Baldy Village! Matt was looking scruffy with his beard (I wonder if he is a Kings fan).
The ride down GMR took forever and I was so done with descending. Once we reached the base of GMR, we decide to ride a mini loop around Bonelli. Michael kept the pace exciting and at one point I was hoping, no praying, for the light at White Ave and Arrow to turn RED! It didn't and I had to throw in the towel and slow down.
Total trip distance 67 miles and I feel great!

Made in England
The artisans behind the handbuilt bicycle from Push Projects on Vimeo.
Made in England is a book by frame builders, about frame builders. It takes a unique look at the world of bespoke frame building by showcasing the artisans in England who craft these bicycle frames.
The authors, Matthew Sowter and Ricky Feather, travelled around the country along with talented photographer Kayti Peschke, to interview the people who are leading this industry. Each artisan shares their methods, their passion, their skills and their quirks. Through these intimate conversations they express what makes them unique in this international art. The book showcases exquisite photography of the frame builders and their working environment, contrasting the raw, rough workshops with sleek images of the beautifully finished final products.
Kayti Peschke, is responsible for putting this film together

Introducing the Farmers Market
A BIKE WITH THE SOUL OF A PICKUP.
Our most requested model is now available in just 10 weeks. When we originally designed the Farmers Market, we said it was a part time touring bike, part time road bike. Meant for gettin’ shit done, lugging around veggies, and having a few beers with the girls on the weekends. This bike does that, but also takes it a step further making it even easier to leave the car at home.

Daddy's Little Buddy
Adam, is daddy's little helper. His entire life he's been around bikes. Over the weekend I was working on my fixie and Adam was right there "working" on the wheels. My little buddy is five and I can't believe how fast time goes by.
I sometimes joke with my wife about opening up a bicycle shop in Pomona. Adam, he's quiet, introverted and shy. I tell Jamie, he's going to be the bike mechanic. I can see him working quietly in the back of the shop, minding his own.

Bonelli on the Road and Mountain
It was an early morning ride to Bonelli Park with Jimmy and Kevin. From Jimmy's house we headed to the East entrance of Bonelli Park and quickly dropped into a fire road that took us thru the south side of the park.
Jimmy and Kevin both did great. It was Jimmy's second time on dirt so we did some technical single track from the Knobby Time Series. I think this was a bit too soon for Jimmy but overall he handled the trails well. Kevin has been off the dirt for many months, so getting back on his mountain bike was awkward. He had a small crash on a fire road that parallels Via Verde. He is going to be sore tomorrow!
See all the pictures, click here ...
We road a good mix of Road and Dirt. This was Jimmy's fourth time out riding so I wanted to give him a survey of Bonelli Park. Despite handling the mountain fine, he wasn't too keen on the single track. The single track was quite technical and it will be a few more rides before Jimmy will feel confident enough to bomb down it. Kevin is getting stronger, I can tell. Training on GMR has proven successful!
